Lonely Boy

Lead single from the Black Keys latest album features some killer dance moves. Inspired by the likes of John Travolta, Carlton Banks and Michael Jackson, its a fusion of only the best. If you dig this lonely boy's moves, leave a comment.

Record Collector

Just out of curiosity, I would like to know...

What was the first CD/record/cassette/mp3 you ever bought/inherited/stole/downloaded?

Mine was Avril Lavigne and I dressed like a skater girl back then. Memories.

Fleet Foxes

This week's adventure took us for a bit of a folk reunion with Fleet Foxes. The band are a 6-piece from Seattle, known for their melancholic choral harmonies and driving folk rhythms. Tickets for their show sold out quickly so we were stoked to lay our paws on them.

When: 11th January 2012
Where: The Tivoli Theatre, Fortitude Valley
What: Fleet Foxes

From hipster to hippie, they were all there, the young and mature alike, all awaiting the bearded men to embrace the audience with something meticulously crafted. A number of instrument changes took place between songs and even mid-song seeing the likes of the double bass, flute, clarinet and the much beloved tambourine.

It was a mixture of intricate guitar lines and shimmering percussion set against an animated backdrop of moving pattern which made for an enchanting night. Standout character was Jesus look-a-like sitting in the backline on the drums. His comic relief supplied was also much appreciated.

I've crossed Fleet foxes off my bucket list now. They provided a very enjoyable experience. Thankyou!

Metronomy

This week ventured us into Brisbane to see Metronomy play at the Zoo. Anji performed a miracle for us and found this gig by accident through a side conversation. Metronomy are an electro/pop/indie band from London whose chilled out beats and melodies gave us a lot more than expected. Personally for myself, these guys are in my top 5 so the anticipation was on an exponential rise and I'd assume that Azza D and Anji could feel something quite similar.

When: 4th January 2012

Where: The Zoo

What: Metronomy

They started off their set with the first track on their new album 'We Broke Free' which rose the expectation of the night to rise up to a very high level. The driving tight bass stole the show as the star with his tight, yet melodic bass lines, the drums took the place as the beat only while the dynamics came from all the other members. On top of that more and more surprises were unwrapped as the night went on - a saxophone solo included.

The highlight and downfall of the night was 3 members of the audience. Annoying as they were; pushing, shoving and singing horribly in our ears, they made the mosh and made it wicked fun.

Has to be the best gig I've been to so far. Kudos Metronomy!

Explosions In The Sky

Photobucket

Our latest expedition took us to see Explosions In The Sky. If you haven't heard of them, they are an instrumental band from Texas whose musical style feature bursting melodies of skittering guitar over textured drum lines.

When: 13th December 2011
Where: The Hifi, West End
What: Explosions In The Sky

The participating crew were Az Maurice, Dyson brothers X 3, Joe, Lagster, Spetchy, Fudz, Sam and Anji. We weren't sure what to expect seeing as their music is purely non-vocal. Were they going to provide blurbs in between songs, demonstrate diversity in covering other artists, or just jam it out?

Well, they jammed it out, sounding full inside the building. There was a lingering transition between each song which made the entire night flow through the mixture of emotive soundscapes. At times they were quite atmospheric, and then after pending on anticipation would explode into a torrent of upheaval with intense build ups and swelling crescendos.

It was a great experience and we all walked away feeling inspired by the possibilities of sound.

Shoutout to Leah Spetch who got to celebrate her birthday! What a good night.

Unlocking the Power of Praise- A Tribute to July, the Month of Parties

The Power of Praise

Over the past few weeks I’ve been meditating of the power of praise (unto God) in our life.  I believe that authentic praise is powerful and in the heart of a believer praise has the ability to unlock the miraculous, shake of the cobwebs and enable them to better hear the voice of God in their life.

Praise is not the fast song, the loud song, or the ‘razz’ as it is sometimes affectionately called.  I believe it is a soul stance, a declaration of who God is and our faith in Him.  While this has little to do with volume, there is something about praise that is bold and passionate.  How can we declare the greatness of our God without wanting to get a little bit loud and crazy?

Praise unlocked

In Hebrew, praise is translated from the word ‘Hallal’ (like in Hallelujah)- meaning to make a show or rave about, to glory in or boast upon, to be clamorously foolish about your adoration of God (eg in Psalm 22:23, Psalm 44:8 & Psalm 63:5).

I love this! If we can't get passionate, loud and a little bit foolish about our God, who is above everything else, what can we get passionate about?!

‘Praise’ can also be translated from the word ‘Tehillah’ – which is to sing ‘hallal’, a new song, a hymn of spontaneous praise glorifying God in song (eg Psalm 34:1 & Psalm 40:3).

I love this also because it reminds me of the space we leave in our present times of praise and worship for people to ‘sing their own song’ or ‘shout their own praise’.

A song is just a vehicle for people to express what is in our heart to God.   A good song seems to effectively capture what you couldn’t quite find the words to say and it connects our hearts with God. I believe things are taken to a whole new level when people begin to personally connect with God using their own words of ‘spontaneous praise’.  Whether shouted, cried, sung, or mouthed softly it’s a ‘new song’ that I believe glorifies God.

Psalm 40:3 reads ‘He has put a new song in my mouth -- praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord.’

With this in mind how can people say praise is not an outward expression?  Logic would tell us people don’t ‘see’ a song they ‘hear’ a song.  Yet this psalm says of the song of praise ‘Many will SEE it and fear, and trust in the Lord.’

As we praise we set an atmosphere for ourselves and others to encounter God. So let the Praising continue!!!!

Unlocking the Power of Praise Part 2

A Memory from long ago…..

I remember once years ago standing in a service when I had recently come back to God.  By nature I can be quite softly spoken, and reserved.  I loved connecting with God in the slower songs that seemed to fit with my personality, yet when it came to ‘Praise’ I felt so awkward.  I was so bound I couldn’t even clap.

I remember this one particular moment where I was so overwhelmed with the magnitude and wonder of God that something in me just wanted to shout and clap like other people but I couldn’t.  But it was so far removed from my personality I just didn’t know where to start.

In that moment I prayed. ‘God I want to clap and shout, please help me.’  A funny sort of prayer really but He answered.  I probably let out a feeble ‘wooo’ and some weak handclaps but something in me shifted.

I love that we as a church get an opportunity every week to ‘to make a show or rave about’ or be ‘clamorously foolish’ about our God.  There are moments to pull out authentic praise and remind our soul of all that He has done in our life.   Sometimes it rolls of the tongue, and other times it is in faith for what we know He is able to do.  But always something in us shifts as our attention is focused on the one who is most worthy.

May the praise in your life always be authentic, passionate and totally focused on the One who gave it all.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Over the last few weeks we have been talking about God desiring our honest, truthful worship.

I would love hear your comments, testimonies etc.

Worship is not just saying the catch phrases 'I love you God' 'God I worship You' 'You are amazing' etc. In the words of David his worship was often more like 'Where are You God' 'Answer me when I call' relieve my distress' etc.

When things are tough I believe God wants us to bring all our baggage of the moment and lay it out before Him.  In this moment as we are honest, I believe intimacy is built and God can change us.

Too often people choose not to enter into worship because they have too much going on in their life and feel that they just cant manage to push through it to ‘worship’.   It's this distance that breaks the heart of God as He wants us near Him.  Our God is strong enough to handle our raw honest complaints, cries and burdens.

We can see this principle at work time and time again in the Psalms, as David really says what he thinks, then his cry is turned to praise as he is drawn closer to God.

I want to see the day when people are so exited to come into a time of worship they are literally waiting in their seats in anticipation for the first drum beat, chord and melody to help them to give voice to what's really going on in their heart.  Be it praise or to declare their utter dependence on Him- regardless of their situation they are just waiting for the opportunity to connect with God.

I love the thought that this truth could inspire worship that is heartfelt, real and I believe so attractive to Heaven.
